Ahlam’s Story

My name is Ahlam, I am 23 years old.

I would like to share with you my story loudly, proudly, confidently, smiling and full of hope!

My story is a combination of tough situations, traditions and social limitations that have prevented many girls, including me, from accomplishing their dreams.

My story begins when my father passed away, the moment I lost the most important person in my life, the man who would always say “I would give you my eyes to see you become a doctor”.

During my childhood, I faced many struggles and difficulties. Because I lived in a secluded neighborhood everything was deemed off-limits to girls, people would intervene in my life and every decision I would make, it always felt like the odds were against me.

Some people around me thought I should stay at home, and others thought I should get married! The person inside me however, kept dreaming and hoping to achieve my father’s dream of becoming an educated person!

After completing my Tawjihi Degree, I felt immense pride in myself, but I became overwhelmed when I began to think about continuing my education, how would I pay for my tuition fees?

Until one day, I heard about Al-Aman Fund for the Future of Orphans and the programs they provide. I can never forget the feeling I got when I realized that I might finally be able to achieve my goals and fulfil my dreams.

I shared with them my story and circumstances, and their response made me feel as if I had a brand-new pair of eyes through which I could see a whole new world! They accepted me and my dream became ever-closer!

After many compromises and sacrifices, I managed to convince my brother and family of the importance of my education. I was set free and was on my way to achieving my dreams!

Every time I commuted to the university and back, I would imagine how the little girl that was so doubtful of her abilities was gone. This was all thanks to the Al-Aman Fund, and their follow up with my process.

I will never forget the joy I felt or the look of pride on my brother’s face when he saw me studying after I was accepted into the university’s counseling and personal psychology program. Nor would I forget my mother’s glow on my first day of work. Most of all, I will never forget my father’s words –may he rest in peace- as he was the secret to my determination and success.

I wanted to share with you my story because in life we always need to have determination and persistence, and we should never accept defeat regardless of the amount of criticism and obstacles in our path. The meaning of my name “Ahlam” is “dreams”, and I dared to dream! Dreams forge the scripts of our lives, so don’t ever give up on them!
Today I am not only a dreamer and a university graduate, I am also a psychologist!

Now I have a case I need to work on!
Please excuse me as I tend to it!
